Excessive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis): Why It Happens (and What You Can Actually Do About It)
Excessive sweating is one of those things that people often feel they just have to “put up with” but in reality, it can be incredibly frustrating.
Whether it’s constantly worrying about what to wear, avoiding certain colours (grey, I’m looking at you), or feeling self-conscious in meetings or social situations, it’s something that can quietly affect your confidence more than people realise.
And the thing is it’s actually very common.
This is what we call hyperhidrosis, where the body produces more sweat than it needs to regulate temperature. Most commonly, this shows up under the arms, but it can also affect the hands, feet and even the face.
For many people, there isn’t a clear reason why it happens. This is known as primary hyperhidrosis, where the sweat glands are essentially a little overenthusiastic. Often, it’s linked to the nervous system so even if you’re not physically hot, your body is behaving like you are.
There are, however, cases where excessive sweating can be linked to other things such as hormonal changes, medications or underlying medical conditions. This is why I always start with a thorough consultation it’s about understanding the cause before jumping straight into treatment.
Now, in terms of managing it, there are some simple things that can help. Clinical-strength antiperspirants (used properly, at night which many people don’t realise) can make a noticeable difference. Small changes like choosing breathable fabrics can also help.
But - and this is usually the point people come to see me - sometimes these measures just aren’t enough.
If that’s the case, there are medical treatment options available, which can be discussed following a consultation. As a Registered Nurse Prescriber, my role is to assess whether this is appropriate for you and guide you through your options safely and honestly.
The aim isn’t to completely stop sweating (we do actually need it), but to reduce it to a level that feels manageable where you’re not thinking about it all the time.
I see many patients from Bournemouth, Christchurch and across Dorset who come in feeling a bit fed up with it, unsure if anything can be done. Often, just having a proper conversation about it is a relief in itself.
And importantly — there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Some people just need reassurance and simple adjustments, while others benefit from a more structured treatment plan.
If excessive sweating is something that’s been bothering you, a consultation is always the best place to start. No pressure, no obligation - just a chance to talk things through properly and understand what your options are.
